Russian installation guide
By A.S. on 17-Nov-11 00:03. Comments (1)
I am pleased to announce that there finally is a comprehensive MODxBB tutorial in Russian available now. This comes in particularly handy as many of the MODxBB users are from Russia.
Alex, one of the first to join the MODxBB club, did an excellent job at writing the Russian installation guide and tutorial.
You can read it here.
MODxBB 0.9.4 Released
By A.S. on 12-Jul-11 23:33. Comments (3)
As some of you might have already realized phpBB 3.0.9 was released last night. This already answers the question about the main change in this version of MODxBB: It's updated to the new version of phpBB.
Those who have already installed 0.9.3 don't need to be scared though, you don't have to do the installing all over again. In fact, depending on the update method you choose you might not even have to download this package.
Tutorial: Setting page permissions for phpBB groups
By A.S. on 23-Jun-11 12:15. Comments (3)
Having users that are registered with MODxBB browse your web pages, will probably invoke the wish to restrict access to certain pages using the phpBB groups. You could recreate them in the MODx Manager using the 'Web Permissions' page, then link them to resource groups. This can be rather tedious and not very productive, though. Particularly for forums with frequently changing or a steadily growing number of members and groups. Additionally you would have to add users manually to groups like 'New Registered', whereas it's done automatically on the phpBB side.
This tutorial shows how to add checkboxes for the phpBB groups to the 'Edit Resource' pages (as shown in the image above). They allow editors to select which groups are permitted to view a resource (web page). The solution itself is referred to as PermissionBB in this text.
I created a demo page and set the permission groups to Administrators and Registered. Those not logged in will be redirected to the unauthorized page. Signing in from there will redirect to the demo page, which is showing some additional info. You can test it here.
Update: LoginBB on phpBB pages
By A.S. on 29-May-11 01:33. Comments (0)
The LoginBB snippet included in the MODxBB package allows users to log into a site on MODx pages.
I had not tested this on phpBB pages and it was originally not intended for those, because there is already a login panel included in them by default. However, it turned out depending on the design of a site it can be needed to place the snippet on phpBB pages anyway, for instance, to retain the web site's coherence.
The version shipped with MODxBB will not work properly on the forum, because it uses relative paths and site tags. Since I received messages from people asking how to get it to work there, I created an updated version of the LoginBB snippet that can be used on MODx pages as well as on phpBB pages.
Recommended: Web2Manager 0.3.3
By A.S. on 24-May-11 15:49. Comments (0)
The latest version runs well with and is a useful complement to MODxBB. It can also be used on non-MODxBB sites of course.
I updated the Web2Manager plug-in to the version 0.3.3 last year and published it on the MODx forum. Unfortunately it is still not available in the extras. The version on there is 0.1.0, which - according to posts on the respective support forum thread - does not work with the latest versions of MODx Evolution.
MODxBB 0.9.3 Released
By A.S. on 19-May-11 23:33. Comments (1)
After having it run on a fairly active site for half a year now, it is time for MODxBB to discover the big, wide web-world.
No performance or stability issues of any kind occurred during the test run whatsoever. It was helpful to add a row of minor improvements and adjustments, though.
My Special Thanks goes to
Niko for his extensive tests and valuable feedback during the development of MODxBB.
The documentation pages included in the zip-file are also available online on modxbb.net/documentation. In return of the delay, the comprehensive manual features a lot more details than originally planned. There is also a complete translation of all document-pages into German.
I successfully did a complete installation using the documentation, to make sure I haven't forgotten anything.
About the delay and release
By A.S. on 24-Mar-11 19:47. Comments (12)
Thanks for the messages and interest into MODxBB and also sorry for the delay.
Because of its personal content I wasn't sure whether to write this news item or not, however, it is also important to me to make it known that I am not comfortable with letting people wait for something that was announced months ago.
Welcome to MODxBB!
